Getting Ready For Summer!

May 2024

We have had to say good bye this past month to residents who have been with us for a long time. This is always part of our work here - we remind ourselves that we are temporary fixtures in their lives - but also believe that our love and care has a long-term impact! As we release them into the next season of their lives, we hope and pray that they continue on their journey toward wholeness and healing, and wish them all the best!

We then turn and say hello to the new kids that our entering our programs. Just this week we are welcoming 3 new residents! Getting to know these kids, and meeting them where they are at with understanding and hope, takes persistence and discernment. Thankfully, our team of house managers are incredibly good at creating a safe space for the new kids to find their footing. Onward and upward!
 

School is almost out for the Summer! Here at the Source that means we have lots of programming activities and outings planned for our residents. It also means we have more hiring to do! Mind Clutter

Living fast-paced means we as individuals can tend toleave things scattered about. It’s hard to make time for actually puting things away.  Before long our β€˜toss piles’ of random items become overwhelming: dirty laundry laying around, clean laundry, unfolded and unsorted taking up a chair, or a bed or *gasp* the floor. Random pens or pencils, or wrappers where they shou;dn’t be. No counter space to prep meals, nowhere to sit while eating the meal (and lets not even start talking about the state of some of our cars!)

The point is, it is easy to let things get cluttered. The more the clutter, the more the disorder, the more frustrating it is when we can’t find what we are looking for or have unexpected company!

 I learned years ago that having an uncluttered home makes me happier. β€˜Stuff’ adds stress to my life. Being forced to downsize due to moving overseas has helped me develop more of a minimalist mind-set, but I still have horder-potential in my DNA, so I have to be VERY intentional about letting β€˜things’ go, and putting things away.

  Recently this skillset I’ve worked hard to develop, hit me in a very different manner.

My house may be uncluttered, my car may be clean, but how many things I am allowing to clutter up my mind?

My activity addiction recently had me trying to text and make appointments and google-search random things while in my car. Of course, I was trying to only look at my phone while stopped at red lights, but then, without realizing I was buzzing with random activities while trying to stay aware of what was in the road ahead of me! A sudden reality check hit my brain STOP! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!

What was I doing? Why? There was nothing so pressing or important that I needed to sort it out while driving!! I realized that I was allowing clutter to build up in my mind, clouding my in-the-moment decision making. An assortment of tasks were bombarding my brain, none of which really mattered in that moment. When I finally quieted my thoughts, and entered the present moment, I also realized that I had been driving for 15 minutes in the opposite direction of where I needed to be!

Quieting our minds and entering the present moment is necessary for our mental, emotional and spiritual equilibrium.

This cannot be overstated. When our β€˜mind clutter’ builds up, bigger issues arise: irritability, lack of focus, poor communication, poor health (and the potential to cause a massive car wreck because we think we can drive while checking things off our to-do lists!) Some of the things that we hyper-focus on can absolutely wait, others are things we really need to let go of.

Think of your mind like a desk with drawers. When the top of the desk gets covered in papers or pens, coffee mugs and knick-knacks, post-it notes and chapstick (or whatever you might have on a desk) it just turns into a mess that interferes with your ability to get anything done.

Take each thought (or stress, or burden) on your mind, and assess whether it matters in the moment. If it doesn’t require immediate attention, put it in a desk drawer. You can reopen that later. The only things that should be on your β€˜desk’ (or the forefront of your mind) are those things that are relevant to β€˜now’. With everything else put away, you can focus on what is needed now. Once that is completed, then move on to the next item in your drawer.

Mind clutter is my newest challenge, the busy-ness, the constant thinking and problem solving, fixating on  what happened, wondering what will happen –all of these things take up space and clutter up my mind. It’s time to minimize what my poor brain should have to focus on at one time. I will be happier, and make better progress!
